Does rehashing the past through writing help you move on to the future?

It depends.

Back when I was fighting addiction, I had this feeling all I needed to do was share my real addiction experience over time—that going public like that would force my perspective to change, and keep me accountable to moving forward and growing.

So I sat down one night and started writing.

A few clumsy hours later, I felt like I was only circling vague versions of everything I wanted to say.

I realized something important that night about the difference between trying to consciously rehash experience, and finding a way to recognize and capture genuine unconscious intuitions.

Here’s a book chapter where I go into detail on that (you might enjoy chapters 21-24)
